This would have to be one of the highlights of my trip down the West Coast. The Principality of Hutt River is an Independent Sovereign State having seceded from Australia on 21st April 1970.
HRH Prince Leonard found a loop hole in the West Australian law finding that this area was never British Proclaimed Territory. So he was able to claim it for himself and is solely self sufficient on his 18,500 acres of land.
He has his own power, water and gets no rubbish collection. The only thing he needs to buy is some groceries so has to trade with an outside country so he told me. His wife Princess Shirley passed away some years ago, his sons help him out now with their families.
We were able to camp down by the river for two nights at $5.00 a night with toilets, shower and water supplied. We also had to buy a visa having stamped with an entry stamp and as we left with an exit stamp.
If we had our passports with us we could have had them stamped. The Visa was a mere $2.00.
They run their own Govt Office and Post Office. You can post anything from there to where ever you want. I asked how that works as there is only Aus Post. Prince Graeme said they put the Hutt River stamps on the back of the envelope or parcel, take them in to Northampton, the nearest town and it's posted from there with no other stamps required.
This is a very intriguing place that you would think couldn't exist, but it does. They run their own sheep and have the shearing shed there, but a lot of machinery now lies around in ruins, what I call Old Relics.
They have their own church where they officiate with weddings and christenings and maybe the occasional funeral.
I was amazed at the feeling upon entering the church, very moving.
