The Kapok Tree
All those years ago when our mattresses, pillows and sofas were stuffed with kapok, I had no idea that it came from a tree. Until it was pointed out to me as we passed one, then another, then another kapok trees along the roadside.
Colleen, having lived in this area, knew exactly what they were. First they have green leaves, then come the bright yellow flowers and a large green pod looking a bit like a lemon. When the flowers die down that green pod bursts open to reveal what looks like cotton you see growing on the cotton bushes.
But this is kapok. Obviously not used any more and these trees have been left over from the farming of kapok trees many years ago.
We came upon heaps of the trees when we camped at Saddle Rest Area, some so high up the cliff face they were undistinguishable without the zoom of my camera lens.
These photos show the trees in their many stages.
